Trip Description: Below is a complete description of Days 1 thru 5  for our 52Best trip to South Africa leaving on November 2nd and returning to New York on November 12th.

            
Day 1 - November 2, 2003 - Sunday:  New York JFK to Cape Town.  Look forward to the adventures ahead as you fly transatlantic nonstop direct to Cape Town aboard South African Airways which has been flying for over 65 years. The award winning airlines has one of the youngest international fleets and best on-time and flying records in the sky. South African Airways uses Boeing's new  B747-400 wide-body stretch liners and frequent flyers may earn and redeem their miles either with Delta's SkyMiles Program or South African Airways Voyager Program.

           
Day 2 - November 3, 2003 - Monday:  Cape Town.  Arrive Cape Town, the legislative capital of Republic of South Africa. You're greeted and transferred to the City Lodge Waterfront The City Lodge Waterfront is a centrally located hotel at the gateway to the vibrant and dynamic V & A Waterfront, within walking distance of Cape Town's CBD, close to the N2 motorway and 15 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. A nautical theme runs through the hotel and a Jacuzzi - pool is available for guests to relax in the warm Cape weather. The Hotel has recently undergone a complete facelift and revamp, which includes 44 additional rooms which will be complete in early February, plus a fitness room and Internet cafe. The evening will be at leisure.

           
Day 3 - November 4, 2003 - Tuesday:  Cape Town. Breakfast At 0830 you are collected from your hotel and taken directly to the lower cableway station on the slopes of Table Mountain (livecam), weather permitting; ascend the mountain by aerial cable car. From a height of 1067 meters view the city and Table Bay below, also Robben Island, the Atlantic seaboard and most of the spectacular Cape Peninsula. Head down to view the Malay Quarter with its narrow cobbled streets and colorful Mosques. Having parked at the top of Government Avenue stroll to the National Gallery and SA Museum. View the Houses of Parliament. Then to the City Hall on the Grand Parade and later a visit to the Castle. You will be dropped off around lunchtime at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront that abounds with shops, pubs, restaurants and entertainment.  This afternoon and evening is at leisure.

          
Day 4 - November 5, 2003 - Wednesday:  Cape Town.  Breakfast. 0830 collection from your hotel. First visit the exclusive suburbs of Seapoint, Clifton and Camps Bay. Continue via Llandudno to the fishing harbour of Hout Bay. If calm seas prevail, join an optional launch cruise to view the Duiker Island seals and cormorants at close quarters. Enter the Cape Point Nature Reserve where you will be taken to the best vantage point to view what is erroneously said to be the meeting place of two mighty oceans. After a stop for an optional lunch the tour continues to a Jackass penguin colony, the Naval hamlet of Simonstown and then via Fishhoek and Kalk Bay to Muizenberg. In the early afternoon visit the Groot Constantia wine estate and Cape Dutch manor house and then the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens at the base of Skeleton Gorge. Return to the city via Rhodes Drive that bisects the plush suburbs of Bishops Court, Claremont and Newlands. The tour terminates at your hotel at about 1730. The evening will be at leisure.

        
Day 5 - November 6, 2003 - Thursday:  Cape Town.  Breakfast. At 0830, after collection from your hotel, we leave the city and head along the N1 motorway to visit the Afrikaans Taal Monument on the outskirts of Paarl. Next we stop at the entrance of the Victor Verster Prison from which President Nelson Mandela was released from detention. A scenic drive is taken to the Franschhoek Valley to visit the memorial to the French Huguenots. Visit one of the many fine wine estates in the region. A cellar tour and a tasting of "the nectar of the gods" is included. Cross the Helshoogte Pass (Hell's Heights) and descend into historic Stellenbosch, centre of learning, rugby and the wine industry. We stop at a second wine estate for an optional lunch washed down with local wines. After a short-guided tour of the second oldest South African town a unique shopping experience awaits you at Oom Samie se Winkel (Uncle Sam's shop). The tour terminates at about 1730 at your hotel. The evening will be at leisure.
